Our lives are full of products that were made by union members. CFMEU members, make a variety of paper products and building materials used in our construction industry.
Manufacturing is a vital part of our economy. It’s a key source of decent jobs, employing four times as many people as mining. It underpins many regional communities and gives young people, especially school leavers, secure, decent, and well paid work. Prior to the Global Financial Crisis, manufacturing accounted for more than one in three of all apprenticeships.
But tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs have been lost and more are under threat because of blind adherence to free trade ideology by successive governments. In the pulp and paper sector unfairly produced and dumped imports have killed off half of the jobs in the sector over the past decade. Adding insult to injury, governments are spending taxpayers money on such products instead of Australian made.
We will campaign to ensure:
- Government, business and the community support manufacturing jobs by buying Australian-made paper and paper products, furniture and building materials.
