We know that working FIFO can be a tough gig! The WA Parliamentary Committees’ report The impact of FIFO work practices on mental health was recently released and has called into sharp focus what we all already know; more needs to be done to support FIFO workers and their families.
While industry continues to downplay the impacts of FIFO work arrangements on workers, we know that FIFO workers spend long periods away from their family and friends, in work camps with poor communications services and undignified accommodation arrangements (including motelling and hot bedding).
The Committee has made a number of recommendations including:
• Encouraging family and worker friendly rosters;
• Developing a FIFO Code of Practice that emphasises worker access to high quality and reliable communications technology;
• Minimisation of motelling accommodation practices, and where possible, its abolition;
• Adopting best practice duty of care provisions under occupational health and safety legislation to ensure that incidents that occur in accommodation provided in connection with a worker’s employment are covered.
Sign our petition to the Western Australian Government to immediately implement the recommendations and improve the health and wellbeing of FIFO workers.
