We expect that the products we rely on are safe and fit for purpose. Workers using such products in construction are also entitled to work in safety.
But the Australian government has done little to stop a flood of unsafe imported products. A recent study from the Australian Industry Group found that the use of sub-standard imported building products was ‘widespread’. While Australian manufactures make sure that their products conform to Australian and International Standards, no such rigour is applied to imports, unlike in other countries such as Japan and the US. Australia’s regulators for product safety are asleep at the wheel.
As a result, glass, engineered wood, furniture and joinery products manufactured by CFMEU members, are under considerable pressure from imported, sub-standard and downright dangerous products. They undercut Australian manufacturers and risk the health and safety of workers who do the right thing, their families and their communities.
We will campaign to ensure:
- All imported manufactured products are tested to ensure that they conform to Australian Standards.
